Volunteer / Internship
Visitors aren't the only people who are educated and inspired by the Toy & Miniature Museum of Kansas City.
Through its affiliation with the University of Missouri – Kansas City, the museum offers several opportunities for those with a passion for teaching and learning to share their talents with the community.
Docent Program
Docents are specially trained educators who help our guests learn about the various exhibits at the Toy & Miniature Museum. They guide tours, answer questions, greet visitors, and help ensure a safe, secure and enjoyable experience for all museum guests.
It takes a special set of skills to be a successful docent:
- Excellent customer service and speaking skills
- Commitment to an intensive education program, including training sessions, shadowing, and a tour review
- Dedication to both the position and the museum, working at least 40 three-hour shifts over the course of a year
Internships
The Toy & Miniature Museum offers motivated college students unique opportunities for internship experiences.
Educational interns will work to develop programming for school groups that complement state curriculum standards.
Docent interns complete an intensive eight-week training program and put the skills they learn to work guiding tours and answering questions for museum guests.
Curatorial interns will work on projects associated with the receipt, documentation, and storage of our collections.
These internships are excellent opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in history, art history, and education programs. Interns may be eligible for academic credit toward their degree in certain departments at UMKC, or another accredited university.
For more information on any of these exceptional opportunities to put your classroom experience to work in a nationally recognized museum, contact Museum Educator Laura Taylor by phone, (816) 235-8000, or email clarkan@umkc.edu.
